30% of Malaysian bus drivers suffer from sleep disorders, says survey

TRANSIT members were shocked and disappointed to read the news in The Star today, which shared the results of a survey by the Sleep Disorder Society of Malaysia and the JKJR which showed that a significant number of Malaysian bus drivers suffer from sleep disorders.

KUALA LUMPUR: Sleeping disorders affect 30 percent of 300 bus drivers in the country, with eight percent categorised as chronic, raising fears about their driving performance.

Sleep Disorder Society Malaysia (SDSM) president Dr Muhammad Muhsin Ahmad Zahari said the statistics were obtained in a joint study with the Road Safety Department (JKJR) recently.

“The survey was carried out on 300 bus drivers from five transport companies nationwide and what shocked us the most was that eight percent are at a severe level,” he told Bernama at the Sleep Disorder Society Malaysia (SDSM) Scientific Meeting – Towards Healthier Sleep in Malaysia event, here on Saturday.

Why is the MPK using the North Klang bus terminal for a night market, instead of a bus terminal? And why hasn’t the Selangor Government stepped in?

TRANSIT took note of this interesting and disturbing article about the introduction of a night market at the site of the old North Klang bus terminal, which was closed in late 2007 when Klang Sentral was opened.

The irony, of course, is that the bus area remains closed to buses – despite the fact that most buses that serve Klang town have returned to the North Klang bus terminal area, and Klang residents have called on the MPK to improve amenities and facilities.

What makes it worse is that in 4 years, the Selangor government has not stepped in to improve public transport in Klang, reopening the North Klang bus terminal and introducing new services. In addition, SPAD has not stepped in and resolved the issue, despite entreaties from TRANSIT, who recommended to SPAD that solving the Klang Sentral and North Klang bus terminal issues was the best place for them to get started.

The resolution of the North Klang bus terminal issue is going to be a major factor in any improvement to public transport in the west Klang Valley.

Flea market draws flak (The Star)

THE Klang Municipal Council’s decision to approve the Nadi Kota Uptown flea market at the site of the former North Klang bus terminal has not gone down well with traders in the area.

They feel that the council’s decision to approve the market which operates from 10pm to 4am daily is not a good idea.

The traders said this was because the bus terminal issue had not been resolved yet after the move to Klang Sentral in Meru four years ago.

Brickfields on ‘collision course’ because of the new bus & taxi lane?

On December 3rd, 2001, buses & taxis leaving KL on the southbound route through Brickfields began using the contra-flow bus & taxi lane on Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

The bus & taxi lane was actually supposed to begin operations on 20th August 2011 but the start was delayed because of objections from business owners in the area who complained that not having car-parks in front of their shops would somehow cause them to lose business.

Now that operations along the bus & taxi lane have started, business owners are actively protesting.

In addition, there is a lot of confusion over what is happening in the area. While the NST claimed that things were going smoothly for buses & taxis, The Star reported traffic chaos. There have been a number of collisions between motorists and, even more disturbing, a number of collisions between pedestrians and buses! A RapidKL bus driver has been suspended pending an internal investigation related to one crash – the aftermath of which resulted in a hostile crowd and vandalising of the bus.

Even worse, it appears that some politicians are getting involved, possibly there to stroke frustrations in order to enjoy a more populist appeal before the upcoming election!

As if the congestion & traffic in Brickfields was not bad enough????

Give new system a chance, public urged (The Star – Metro)

THE residents and traders of Little India in Brickfields should give the newly-introduced bus and taxi lane system a chance before dismissing it as non-workable, said Federal Territory People’s Progressive Party chairman Datuk A. Chandra-kumanan.

“Whatever rules and policies implemented by the government has been carried out in accordance with the wishes of the people and for it to work you need to give it time,’’ he said.

Chandrakumanan, who made a working visit to Brickfields on Tuesday, said he decided to see for himself what was happening after receiving complaints from the public.

On 31 October we said goodbye to the Klang Bus Stand. When can we say hello to improved public transport services there?

TRANSIT took note of this article about the closing of the Klang Bus Stand (Pasarama Kota) which last saw service on 31 October 2011.

While TRANSIT is happy to hear about infrastructure improvements, and we acknowledge that the Klang Bus Stand needed improvement, we also want to see improvements to public transport service for the long term.

Yes, move the Klang and Banting-bound buses to Pudu Sentral. Yes, leave them there and use the Pasar Seni / Jalan Sultan Mohammed bus stand for RapidKL and other stage buses.

But please, would you take the minor steps needed to make those stage bus services faster and more reliable?

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — Demolition of the Klang Bus Stand will begin by year’s end to make way for the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange with the LRT, the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) said today.

Has KL reached ‘peak car’ yet? Will we be ready when it happens?

The term “Peak oil” refers to the impact of three very significant economic laws, namely:

  • The Law of Increasing Returns to Scale tells us that a company or organization that increases the scale of its operations & activities will reduce average costs and increase revenues and profits;
  • The Law of Increasing Relative Costs tells us that as production increases, costs will increase at a faster and faster rate until costs overwhelm returns;
  • The Law of Diminishing Returns tells us that the availability of a product will decrease and its cost will increase over time as the supply decreases and production costs increase;

Once the ‘economic peak’ is reached the average cost of producing  oil will continue to increase as the availability of oil will continue to decrease and the cost of production of oil will continue to increase.

Hentian Putra remains open while bus lanes closed for repair until 31 October

TRANSIT took note of this announcement regarding the closure of the internal bus lanes at Hentian Putra, the bus terminal near the Putra World Trade Centre, Hentian Putra KTM Komuter halt, and PWTC LRT station.

The repairs are expected to be completed by 31 October.

Brickfields bus & taxi lane delayed until after Deepavali. Will the new initiatives make a difference?

TRANSIT has taken note of recent plans to build bus & taxi lanes on Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. Originally we were told that the bus & taxi lanes would be in place by August 20th. However, we have recently learned that the Federal Territories & Urban Wellbeing Ministry will be delaying the completion of the bus & taxi lanes until after Deepavali.

This is apparently to “avoid confusion” over the lanes, and to also allow enough time to complete the construction of additional parking spaces behind the shops along Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

The 4-lane wide road, a major corridor for private vehicles & public transport, is known to be perpetually congested, partly because of vehicles double parking along the side of the road. It remains to be seen how drivers will respond to the future plan for Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

As far as we know (since we have yet to see a map of the proposal) we will likely see one KL-bound bus & taxi lane on the kerbside near KL Sentral, two KL-bound lanes for mixed traffic, and a single contraflow bus & taxi lane on the  KL Monorail side, for traffic bound for Seputeh & Bangsar.

THE bus and taxi lane system in Brickfields will start after the Deepavali celebrations, said Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

Raja Nong Chik said the bus lane system would be implemented after the festival so as not to confuse the public.

“This will also give Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) ample time to complete building the 52 parking lots behind the business premises in Little India Brickfields,’’ he said.

Klang residents want the council to improve public amenities such as bus stops, phone booths and taxi stands

TRANSIT took note of this interesting article detailing residents complaints about bus stops, phone booths and taxi stands in central Klang.

TRANSIT has always had a soft spot for Klang. We still do not understand why the local government & Selangor Government have allowed the “Royal Town” to become so run-down and disappointing.

The construction of the overhead flyover, the closure of taxi stands and the North Klang bus terminal (forcing buses to either use Klang Sentral or crowd along Jalan POS Bahru), and the construction of a “racetrack” ring road around Klang are all examples of how the town has been pulled apart by “helpful” construction projects that have actually made the city less enjoyable for the people who live there.

KLANG: Residents of Klang are unhappy with how public amenities are being maintained.

Among the amenities are bus stops, telephone booths, as well as taxi stands. There are even complaints that road signs are in need of repair.

Melaka tram project to “go legit”?

Some of our readers may have heard of the phrase “to go legit'” (legitimate).

One might think that the phrase “to go legit” refers to when criminal concerns (you know, mafia, gangsters, politicians) attempt to exit their life of “crime” and find legitimate ways to earn money. In some cases, to “go legit” actually refers to the laundering of money – investing the proceeds of criminal activity into non-criminal activity, in the hope of increasing the value of their wealth.

In this particular case we use the phrase “go legit” because it nicely describes the new attempt to help the questionable Melaka Tram project to find some sort of resolution with SPAD, within the confines of Malaysian Law.

Those who have followed our website know we have expressed our admiration for the enthusiasm of Melaka Chief Minister Mohd. Ali Rustam, but questioned his advisers for giving him poor advice on public transport.

The succession of incomplete or ineffective public transport “solutions” (like the monorail and the Aerorail) mooted by the CM have not inspired confidence. But TRANSIT has seen the improvements (even though we have serious questions about the Melaka Tram).

And so we wonder if Ali Rustam & Melaka public transport are “gonna make it” and that it “might work out fine this time.”

Rail transport to ease congestion (The Star)

MALACCA: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has proposed a rail link to address the state’s infamous traffic congestion.

SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said a high volume of vehicles entering the city contributed to the bottleneck in the tourist city.
