TRANSIT took note of this notice of service termination produced by KTMB with information about the final date of KTM intercity service to Singapore.
The final service will take place on 30 June 2011. From 1 July 2011 all KTM service will stop at JB Sentral with shuttle trains providing service between JB Sentral and Singapore’s Woodlands Checkpoint.

The last journey from Tanjong Pagar railway station has caught the attention of the public. We now learn that the Sultan of Johor will be driving the last train out of Singapore.
Tickets snapped up for KTMB’s final Tanjong Pagar service (NST)

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 170 people will be on the last train out of Tanjong Pagar station in Singapore on June 30, but chances are, they will not be rushing to get aboard before the green flag signifying the start of the journey is waved.
Almost all of the 172 tickets for the final journey were snapped up after they went on sale at noon yesterday, pointing to the possibility that many wanted to be a part of the historic occasion.
Just five hours after the ticket counters opened for business, the second class sleeping coach tickets were sold out, while the first and second class coaches had only two and 56 tickets left, respectively.
The Ekspres Senandung Sutera locomotive will depart at 10pm from the Tanjong Pagar station, breaking the silence of the darkness of the night for one last time. The express train service ends at the Kuala Lumpur Sentral station.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd corporate communications executive Kelvin Khew said a sending-off celebration would be organised to commemorate the historic occasion. “The celebration will start at 11pm with many activities lined up, (including) selling the train’s memorabilia.” Besides that, said Khew, an exhibition would be held at the Tanjong Pagar station from June 26 to 29, in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia.
The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, will drive a special train from Tanjong Pagar and stop at the Woodlands Immigration checkpoint, then continue to Johor Baru Sentral after getting a licence last year.
Meanwhile, a page has been set up by several people on social networking site Facebook.
Called “The Last Train Into Tanjong Pagar”, it has already accumulated 357 fans since it was created earlier this month.
Most of them expressed their sadness over the closure of the Tanjong Pagar station.
On July 1, the curtains will come down on the Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Timah stations in Singapore as KTMB terminates its rail services in the republic south of the Woodlands train checkpoint.
The Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Timah stations have been providing rail services for Malaysians and Singaporeans since 1932 and 1915, respectively. The Tanjong Pagar site and other KTMB land parcels in the island republic will be jointly developed by MS Pte Ltd, a company with a 60 per cent stake held by Khazanah Nasional Bhd and 40 per cent by Temasek Holdings Ltd.
This was agreed upon during a series of bilateral meetings which also involved Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his Singapore counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong, last year.
Goodbye, Singapore. Goodbye to the glory days of KTM and hello to a new international rail relationship.
We only have one question: Will KTMB service ever come back to Singapore?

So what happens to the KTMB rolling stock which is used to service these parts. I hope they won’t have a KTMB grave yard like rapidkl’s bus grave yard.
The trains will still be servicing JB Sentral so we doubt there will be any major changes in that way. As for the infrastructure at the stations, we do not know how (or it) it will be dismantled (and if that is the case, where it will go).

I’m going to miss Tanjong Pagar. The only part of Singapore that you could have a smoke indoors without being caught by those nosy enforcement officers. Good times.
Dear Moaz, seems like all train services terminating in Tanjong Pagar (7 inbound and 7 outbound daily) currently will be truncated to Woodlands Train Checkpoint (WTCP). A very unusual station as it’s mainly built as a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) checkpoint, thus very unfriendly to non-passengers who just wish to do some trainspotting.
Hence, to say that trains will terminate in JB Sentral and passengers must take Shuttle service to Woodlands is not really correct, at least not this coming July. All passenger services will go directly into Woodlands I assume.
Regarding your final question, now that Singapore authorities already claimed that Downtown Line MRT will be extended to Woodlands, somewhere near Republic Polytechnic to be exact, from which the Singapore – Malaysia RTS (Rapid Transit System) will begin, maybe the most we can hope for is for KTM to bid for the operation of this so-called RTS. Or RapidPenang maybe, since they seemed to be more efficient.
Even if KL – Spore HSR is built one day, chances are it won’t be operated by KTM.
Thanks for the observation. At this time we expect that KTM intercity trains will try to terminate at Woodlands (as identified in the notice of closure – but since this will lead to additional inconveniences, we expect that in a short time the Intercity services will be pulled back to JB Sentral, while shuttle trains make up the difference.
Of course, this will depend on the technology in place. If the RTS is set up as a double-tracked and electrified system, then it will be possible to have shuttle trains between JB & Singapore. But we also have to remember that the main limiting factor will be immigration. It will be safer and easier for KTMB to have intercity trains terminate at JB Sentral – though it will be less convenient for commuters.
