Parking issue at station

REPRESENTATIVES of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) paid a site visit to Jalan SS4C/1, near the Kelana Jaya LRT station in Petaling Jaya, where residents are facing problems caused by indiscriminate parking.
According to the residents, commuters are parking by the side of the road and on two plots of land on which there are Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) high tension pylons.
MBPJ councillor Cynthia Gabriel met with the SS4C Taman Rasa Sayang Rukun Tetangga (SS4C RT) representatives, who listed their complaints.
SS4CRT secretary Herman Chia said commuters parked their vehicles indiscriminately, imposing on the residential roads.
“This causes traffic congestion in the area as the roads here do not cater for the high volume of cars.
“We would like to request the authorities to close the station parking gate near the residential area as it encourages people to park here.
“We would also like them to close one of the parking areas and merge the other plot of land with the LRT parking lot.
“The people who drop off or pick up commuters should use the drop-off and pick-up area that was built for the purpose instead of coming into the housing area to do so,” he said, stressing that people should use the facilities provided by the LRT operator.
Gabriel explained that closing one of the parking lots would not resolve the problems, but said the council would look into issue of the drop-off and pick-up points.
“What we can do is try to legalise the parking lots because we want to encourage people to use public transport.
“Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) has plans to upgrade the station with a multilevel car park facility.
“Nevertheless, we will speak to Prasarana about this matter.
“It would be better if the residents could have a dialogue with Prasarana, which we could help facilitate.
“We will get the enforcement team to do regular checks in the area, too,” she said.
She also said that the MBPJ was looking into a similar problem at Taman Bahagia LRT station.
Parked cars near LRT station block roads

PETALING JAYA: Cars parked illegally near the Kelana Jaya LRT station are causing congestion in Jalan SS4.
Residents are complaining that the narrow residential roads are clogged up during peak hours due to cars going in and out of the illegal car parks near the station.
“The illegal car parks have mushroomed in the past six months and the number of cars parked exceeds those at the designated LRT car park,” said Herman Chia, SS4 neighbourhood watch secretary.
“Jalan SS4C/1 is congested between 7am and 8.30am and between 5pm and 7.30pm,” Chia told Petaling Jaya councillor Cynthia Gabriel who visited the area with several enforcement officers yesterday.
Chia said residents also had to put up with the noise and pollution from the traffic.
He said heavy vehicles had also started to use the residential roads.
Chia also claimed that there had been an increase in snatch thefts targeting not only LRT commuters but also residents.
“We hope Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd will discuss with the residents ways to solve the traffic problem and encourage the public to use the main entry and exit points provided by the management,” he said.
Chia and other residents also urged the Petaling Jaya City Council to find a solution.
Gabriel said the residents’ complaints had been noted and the council would review the matter.
“We have to find ways to maybe legalise the car parks and also look for solutions that would not burden the SS4 residents,” she said.
Gabriel also said the Taman Bahagia LRT station was also facing a similar problem.
An enforcement officer said the parking problem had to be studied further as closing down the illegal car parks might result in motorists parking their cars in front of the houses.
The officer said the council also planned to install barriers to prevent heavy vehicles from entering the residential roads.
