KTMB Financial Restructuring

KTMB seeks to get back on track
25 August 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) will consult the Finance Ministry to restructure the national railway operator’s debts, its newly-appointed managing director Dr Aminuddin Adnan said.

TRANSIT Says:You cannot get blood from a stone … but it is good to see that KTMB is trying harder to get funding from the Finance Ministry. They have been starved for funds for many years, so much so that trains are breaking down, necessary upgrades to rolling stock and maintenance are being deferred, and there simply aren’t enough trains to meet existing demand.

KTMB Tickets for Raya selling out fast

Raya rail tickets snapped up fast
Wednesday August 26, 2009

TRAIN tickets to the east coast for the Hari Raya celebrations from Sept 15 to 19 are all sold out and only a small number of tickets to the south are still available.

According to the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) Intercity Services marketing manager Mohd Noordin Kimi, 100,000 tickets were reserved for the festive season.

“The 100,000 tickets were reserved for both directions and 48.8% out of the 50% of the tickets reserved for journeys out of Kuala Lumpur have been sold out,” he said.

However, Noordin said KTMB was still considering adding extra coaches in order to cater for last minute travellers.

Feeder Bus Service to KTM Stations

Looking at the important requirement of feedering service at various Komuter stations, KTM Komuter has collaborated with the city’s main bus operator, Rapid KL. Rapid KL has complemented the Komuter service by providing feeder bus services at 17 KTM Komuter stations namely:

[Rawang-KL railway subdivision]

[KL-Port Klang rail subdivision]

[KL – Seremban railway subdivision]

[KL Core railway subdivision]

The existing feedering service will be improved and the coverage will be extended to other routes and stations.

TRANSIT Says:

We complement KTMB on their enthusiasm and expanded services. But, regarding the feeder buses, we cannot help but wonder what RapidKL thinks. Technically, KTM has not contracted with RapidKL to provide these services as “feeders”; in fact, RapidKL is providing the service because of the KTM station but cannot / will not actually enter the station area.

TRANSIT hopes that KTMB and RapidKL could work together and come up with a real, effective arrangment for feeder services. And we are happy to see the maps of the feeder services, which are local and neighbourhood-based. We have been asking RapidKL to produce similar maps for some years.
