TRANSIT Says:

While we are happy to see that RapidKL appears to be listening to the safety concerns of female passengers, we believe that more could be done to encourage safety through programs to reduce crowding at stations and on trains, increase the number of security personnel on trains, and of course, educational campaigns to discourage people from harassing female passengers (and encouraging passengers to report such incidents).

If RapidKL really is interested in introducing “women-only coaches” it will be quite challenging given that the trains are “walk-through” designs. One solution would be to couple existing 2-coach trains together to make a 2+2 trainset – presumably with one set for female passengers and one set for other passengers.

Also, RapidKL needs to look at the layout of stations to make it easier for passengers to get in and out. Removing the standing “tombstone” advertising would increase available space and help passengers get in and out more easily.

In the meantime, TRANSIT reminds passengers that if you are not comfortable with the level of crowding on the LRT, wait for another train. On the Kelana Jaya line this means a wait for 3-5 minutes during peak hours, with a 1 in 3 chance that the train will be a spacious 4-carriage set.

It is also a matter of crowd control. I think I had came across reports of London and Sydney temporarily closing their stations when the trains get overloaded to avoid peak passenger crush.

That is a very good example.

As we saw from the last LRT disruption, RapidKL still has to work on crowd control and information & communications.
