Dubai opens first metro line on 09.09.09 (at 9:09 pm and 9 seconds)

Middle Eastern mega vision city / playground Dubai has opened the first of their 2 mass-transit lines on 09.09.09 (at 9:09:09 to be exact) to winners of a “Golden Ticket” Contest.

The Red Line is the world’s longest driverless metro system. The trains are 5 carriage trainsets with Gold Class (VIP) and Silver Class (economy) train carriages.

According to the article, UAE Vice President launches Dubai Metro at Gulfnews.com,

The Metro is part of Shaikh Mohammad’s vision to develop an integrated transport system including the Metro, bus network, marine transport and an advanced road infrastructure.

It is also interesting to note that Dubai Metro will permit folding bicycles and that Dubai is looking at building 900km of cycling paths – proving that if people can cycle & use public transport in a fantastically wealthy Middle Eastern city, they can certainly cycle & use public transport in KL!
