More disabled-friendly Komuter stations by 2010
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) managing director Datuk Abdul Radzak Abdul Malek said, the government had allocated RM10mil under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) to install five KTM stations with facilities for the disabled at the Rawang, Sungai Buloh, Bandar Tasik Selatan, Serdang and Shah Alam stations.
“This fund would be used to build two lifts, ramps at the station entrance and at platforms, creating a passage incorporating tactile indicators, disabled toilets and special parking bays at each station involved,” he said at a briefing ceremony for media at the KTMB headquarters here.
TRANSIT Says:
Well, we give KTM a bit of credit for doing this. Prasarana has not done anything about making the Ampang LRT line stations or monorail stations accessible so in that context, kudos to KTM.
We also note that, according to the article, seven stations have already been equipped with basic facilities for the disabled. They are:
- Sentral Kuala Lumpur
- Midvalley
- Kepong Sentral
- Bank Negara
- Subang Jaya
- Seremban
- Kajang
So by late 2010 there will be 12 existing stations with universal accessibility, as well as the new stations that will come online as part of the Sentul-Batu Caves extension.
However, we also note that local councils have done very little to make the community around the KTM Stations more accessible. Subang Jaya is a case in point, with broken kerbs, fast-driving cars, randomly parked cars, uneven pavement, and no accessible bus service.
A lot more needs to be done here.
